Your rising sign, also called your "ascending sign" is the sign of the zodiac that was on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. You may also hear this referred to as your "ascendant" which is actually the exact degree of the sign at that time. If you were born at around dawn, then your sun sign and your rising sign are the same, but if you were born at a different time, then these signs will be different.

In order to figure out what your rising sign is, you need to know the time of your birth (or an estimate of it). From there, you can either look up your rising sign in an astrological chart or type it into an astrology software program (which is what we do here at myastrologyadvisor.com).

The reason that your rising sign is important, is because it describes the way you present yourself to others. Unlike the sun sign, which represents how you truly are, the rising sign explains how you appear outwardly. This goes a long way in explaining seeming inconsistencies in people, like the sensitive Cancer who acts more like a boisterous Leo when around others.
