Have you ever heard the saying "when venus is aligned with mars"? This saying is really a type of planetary aspect, as it deals with how the planets are positioned in the sky at any one time. When astrologers create a birth chart, they look not just at the positions of the planets at the time of your birth, but also how those planets "align" with each other. Specifically, they look at the exact degree that each planet occupies. Of course, this involves a lot of math unless you have an astrology software program to do it for you. Once the exact degress of each of the planets has been set, astrologers look for major aspects (or patterns) of angles. In general, there are three major types of aspects: conjunct, harmonious and opposite. Conjuct aspects happen when there are planets just a few degrees from each other (thing of a circle with 360 degrees when considering how far apart planets are from each other). Conjunct planets work in tandem, almost as one. Harmonious aspects happen when planets are 60 or 120 degrees apart, and they support and assist each other. Opposite aspects happen when two planets are 90 degress (a right angle) or 180 degrees apart. In an opposite aspect, the planets battle each other, and are considered "hard." These general aspects lend themselves to five more specific major aspects, which are explained below: Conjunctions: If two planets are withing 8 degrees of each other, they are said to be conjunct, even if they are not in the same sign. Conjunct planets work together to act as one. Oppositions: Planets in opposition are easy to spot on a birth chart because they are opposite each other either directly, or as right angles. Opposite planets war with each other. For example, if your sun and moon are in opposition, you may consciously desire one thing, and subconsciously desire another. Squares: Like oppositions, squares create friction between planets. They can be the source of frustration and anxiety. Trines: Trines bring opportunities as planets in signs of the same element assist each other. Sextiles: When planets are two signs apart they lend support. This is the weakest of the planetary aspects. |
