The inner planets of the zodiac, sometimes called the "personal" planets, are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Although they don't reflect as much information as the sun, moon and rising signs do, they each have an effect on your personality (which is why they are called personal planets).

To find out the position of each of these planets, you'll need to know the approximate time of your birth, and chart the planets accordingly using an astrology table or software.

Below is a description of how each of the inner planets affects your personality:

Mercury: This is the planet of communication, which is fitting given that in mythology, Mercury was the messenger to the gods. Communication with regards to this planet include intellect, public-speaking, writing, wit and knowledge. If you have the ability to express yourself well or are a great intellect, you may have Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, two mercury signs that excel at communication.

Venus: If you guessed that Venus reflects your feelings about love and passion, you are right. Astrologers associate Venus with the way you interact with others in terms of love, lust, flirtation and sex. Venus also describes how well you do with money, and your predispositions about art and beauty.

Mars: In mythology, Mars was the god of war. Fittingly, the position of Mars at the time of your birth sheds light on your predisposition for anger and violence. Astrologers have long associated it with murder, injustice and malice. Of course, Mars isn't all bad. It also deals with action and energy, desire and passion.

Jupiter: Jupiter is the planet of luck and well-being. Like the planet itself (which is the largest of all), those with the strong effect of Jupiter are likely to grow and expand with opportunity. They have great success and often times, wealth. The downside of Jupiter is that it can express gluttony or living in excess.

Saturn: Saturn is the planet of structure and order. It reflects the reality of life, even if it is unpleasant. This includes your feelings about limitations, fear and responsibility. On the positive side, Saturn may help us to overcome what we are afraid of, to set and keep goals and to work hard. On the negative side, Saturn can heighten our insecurities or cause us to wilt in the face of adversity.
